Let’s Create a Language! (An Introduction to Linguistics)*
Time: 10:00-11:00 AM
Place: Zoom

People have been creating languages for hundreds of years—for unity, for art, for experiment. Most of these languages never become known, but some have attained modest celebrity (e.g., Klingon, Star Trek; Dothraki, Game of Thrones) or acquired millions of speakers (e.g., Esperanto). How could you create a language? Make up some words? Yes, and much more. Language entails a complex system of sounds, meaning, word-formation processes, and word-order rules. Language creators must know all facets of Linguistics. By the end of this session, you will know more about what language is. You will also learn what Linguistics is and what courses are available at UMD. This event is designed for incoming students, but may also be of interest to any student who has not yet settled on a major, is interested in studying language, or has ever wondered about Linguistics. Place: Kirby Garden Room
“What is Public Health?” is a conversation hosted by student leaders who are majors in the UMD Public Health program. “Public health promotes and protects the health of people and the communities where they live, learn, work and play.” The UMD Public Health Program emphasizes the behavioral science/health education discipline (with exposure to statistics, environmental health, epidemiology, and healthcare systems) as we prepare students to improve the lives of individuals, groups, and communities through education. According to the Bureau of Labor & Statistics, the projected job growth rate for health educators and community health workers is 11 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. Learn about the opportunities that the Public Health major, Public Health minor, and Health/Wellness Coaching minor can provide for you during your time at UMD and in preparation for your career. Discover ways to develop your skills and connect with faculty, fellow students, and public health professionals via research and programming assistantships, the Public Health Student Group, study abroad, social media, the Public Health Student Showcase, and networking events.
